Creating Fitness Videos

My students love to make video's. We did a driver safety video for Driver Education and now we are creating "lifetime fitness video." I showed students several different types of lifetime video's such as yoga, kickboxing, pilaties, and had the students particpate in the workout. Now, the students are responsible for creating a video. They must have a introduction section of the video where they explain the medical concerns, warm up procedures, muscles targeted in workout, and safety tips. The students are going to be responsible for editing the video, which they have done before. They will add music and any effects they want.
The purpose of the video is not just to make a video, it is to have students reseach a topic such as yoga, and be able to demonstrate and display thier knowledge of that topic. Students are working in groups so they will use collaboration and cooperatation to produce thier video. Using the computers and flip cameras creates excitement for the students. They have done a great job in the planning process with brainstorming, discussing the treatment with me, and creating the storyboard.
This process has been fun and I can't wait to see the final videos!

  1. Val - you've got to share some of these videos if you have your students make them! haha I bet they will be so fun! This would really get them thinking about all the different components of video making and editing...for example one thing they will have to think about is mood...for example, you wouldn't want a fast upbeat song with crazy transitions for a yoga video :)

  2. Awesome Val. I did a video lesson with my students during fitness testing. I was frustrated by students not knowing the proper form for a push-up. As you know, students do this several times every year. I divided the class into groups and each group used a flip camera creating a video on how to perform the proper push-up. What made this extremely interesting for an experiment was 12 of my students were in health (we are a school that has only health teachers). This part of my class returned after the videos were shot and completed. Fitness tests were done 2 weeks later. The students who were involved in the videos performed the push-ups correctly, the other half still perform the push-ups incorrectly. Hence, students learn by doing.

  3. The kids did enjoy this very much. We just finished the videos and some of the kids who don't always get invovled told me that they had a lot of fun making the videos. I think they liked the freedom of choosing the topic and being creative.
